Boruca Indigenous Reserve

The Boruca Indigenous Reserve, where the indigenous people of the Boruca or Brunca Indians live, is located in the Talamanca Mountains, only 12.4 miles (20 km) from the border with Panama. The majority of the 2000 members of the tribe live in the area of about 34,595 acres (14,000 ha), which according to the Costa Rican law is self-governed. The Boruca Indians are one of the tribes who have their roots in pre-Columbian times and still cultivate their traditions today. They are known for their crafts, including their handmade, colorful masks made of wood.
