The natural and animal protection area Caño Negro is located in the north of the province of Alajuela and was founded in 1984. The wetland area covers 25,133 acres (10,171 hectares), about 80 % of which is formed by the three meter deep Caño Negro Lake. This is a significant overflow area for the Arenal Lake and disappears during the dry season from February to May. Caño Negro is one of the most important wetlands in the Ramsar Convention.
